The Toyota Highlander was announced in April 2000 at the New York Auto Show and arrived in late 2000 in Japan and early 2001 in North America. The Highlander became the first car-based midsize SUV or midsize crossover. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged truck-based midsize 4Runner and had become Toyota's best-selling SUV until the smaller RAV4 outsold it in 2006. The Highlander shares the Toyota Camry platform with its Lexus RX cousin and comes in five and seven-seat configurations, and has quickly become a success for Toyota in a number of markets across the world. Toyota will begin building Highlanders at the Indiana plant in late 2009.
